Sagaing is the capital of Sagaing Region in Myanmar. It is located 20km to the southwest of Mandalay across the River Ayeyarwaddy. Sagaing is well known for religious and monastic centers, with numerous pagodas.
Monywa is a town in central Myanmar and situated on the eastern bank of the Chindwin River, Sagaing Region. It lies 136km north-west of Mandalay along the Mandalay-Budalin branch railway line.
Nyaunggan is located in BudalinTownship, Monywa District, and Sagaing Region. A cemetery, near Nyaunggan Village, Budalin Township, was excavated in 1998 and 1999. The excavation involved five pits. Most of the skeletons with bones in situ were extended and supine primary burials, although there was one secondary burial, consisting of a skull in a large pot.
Shwe Ba Hill
Shwe Ba Hill, just beyond Pho Win Hill in Monywa. Features unique pavilions cut from the surrounding sandstone and filled with plain Buddha images. It is on the West Bank of Chindwin river. There, temples and caves are curved out of volcanic rocks and inside walls of some caves are decorated with 13th Century/ 18th Century mural paintings.
Monywa’s Twintaung is a natural lake where very rare Spirulina is found all year round. It is harvested from the lake for use in pharmaceutical, cosmetic and food supplemental products. The whole process of Spirulina production can be seen at the small factory based there. The scenery around this beautiful lake is also breathtaking and worth the visit.
It is one of the most famous pagodas in the region that is located in the center of the AlaungdawKathapa National Park. Hundreds of thousand pilgrims pay homage to the Pagoda annually during the dry season. It is located in Minkin Township of Sagaing Region. Established as a wildlife sanctuary in 1941 and opened as a National Park in 1984. It is the largest National Park in Myanmar.
Near the reclining Buddha image, also on Po KhaungTaung range is the AungSakkya Pagoda, 441.75ft in height (including the base of 216.75ft ).
